Sorry that I've been less present than normal -- this whole house selling/buying process sure is time-consuming! We've had at least one showing almost every day, with up to 4 in one day. I've never cleaned so much and so furiously in my life. Well worth it though, because after just one offical week on the market, we are working out a contract. Not only that, but we've also found a dreamy house that we love, and are so very excited. The new house is very English Countryside, and in the wee hours, I've been madly pinning ideas to my Pinterest home boards.
It's had me thinking about my decorating style, and how I'm quite steady in that. Which of course brought me to thinking more on my personal style. I've consistenly struggled with trying to pinpoint my style, because it has always wavered between two ends of the spectrum -- preppy classic, and a more romantic boho flowiness. In my head, I kept telling myself at this point in my life, I should just pick one, work my wardrobe around it, and be done. I found myself giving away/sell items that fit one personality and later on regretting it.
Instead, I've come to embrace the fact that my "gut-feeling style" is both, and will be quite likely for the rest of my days. I feel comfortable and chic in either style. I happily wear a gingham button-up shirt under a preppy crewneck sweater one day and a flowy, lacy tunic with boots the next day. I'm finally embracing it, and just focusing on editing to the items that make me feel amazing, that are comfortable (making me more likely to reach for them), and that will last me for as long as I want to wear them.
Preppy me:
What is your style? Do you keep to one aesthetic, or do you ramble a bit? Are you still trying to nail it down or have you settled into your best look?

Hi M! As you likely know, I ramble a LOT! What I realized that in the end, I am not really preppy, despite dipping my toes so firmly into the JCrew waters! I enjoy classic clothes at work, but there has to always be "something" - some embellishment of some kind, usually in the form of a really nice material or interesting cut. I called it embellished chic over on my blog, but honestly, not sure for sure what it is! I love that you have two different styles - I think it makes you and your blog so interesting!
ReplyDeleteAnd many congratulations on your house sale and finding a new lovely house! That is wonderful news!
Hi WMM and thanks! I think it's great to have that realization of your preference, so you have a much clearer undestanding of what you will actually reach for and wear more.
DeleteI'm a perplexing mix of styles, too, and I think it helps to keep things interesting. Like you say, if you try to narrow it down too much, you'll regret it later. Good luck with the new house!
ReplyDeleteHi Sue and thank you! I agree, it does make things a little more interesting for me, and helps me to not get too bored with my closet.
DeleteMy closet also has an apparent split personality. Preppy one day, hipsterish the next. I have noticed that my style tastes change due to the weather. I'm more boho/hipster in the colder months because of the layers. I've been split like this for a long time and I'm okay with it, but it did bother me for a long time.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found a new house already. Getting a new home is always so exciting!
Ha, yes, it's true, I'm also more boho in the winter b/c of layers -- great observation! I didn't even think of it that way. :)
DeleteWe're really excited and starting to work out some ideas (yay) and budgets (ack)!
I feel that my style has split personalities too. Definitely more boho but I also really like structured, classic pieces that go with nearly everything. I think that's why I follow your blog; I could see myself wearing nearly every outfit you show. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Shaina! I think a lot of people have the split personality, and perhaps it just gets a bit more pinpointed as we grow older. :)
DeleteThis is why those style books that try to peg certain styles onto us are so off the mark, I think many of us are a bit split. I like florals and dresses in nice fabrics and then sometimes I just want to be a bit modern and wear a tone on tone outfit with some serious shoes. Definitely a split personality, I used to think it was because I am a Gemini, lol!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the house, I know it's been a lot of work and I'll be so happy to know you have things wrapped up! Then it will be so exciting for you to think about moving and settling in. :)
I agree Dani, there are so many people who have the split, b/c we all have changeable moods and times when some things have priority (like comfort).
DeleteThanks re the house, we're very excited, but it's a crazy process. We have to keep showing the house, which has been daily, so it's a bit unsettling. All worth it in the end though!
