j.crew reviews: tweed dress, hothouse top, corkscrew pencil.

Hi everyone!

Some reviews for you today, from a stop at the store early this week, two new items and one that's been around online for a little bit longer.

First is the Long Sleeve Tweed Dress, which finally made it into a store for me to try on. I had about 5 minutes, so grabbed my usual size 4 dress, and threw it on. It felt too tight on me, but I definitely liked the dress style and want to try on the 6. It was shorter than I expected (again), but I didn't think that was a bad thing in this case, due to the conservative neckline and sleeves. I actually really liked this one a lot, and will update when I try the 6.

Finally, the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Corkscrew Tweed, in my usual size 4 for pencils. It's that tweed that shows the bulges, so I'd probably try sizing up if I liked this one. My first impression, pretty color, but the material is going to get messsssed up. I could already tell how it would pill and pull and get ratty, just hanging up against other clothes in the closet. I like the pattern and the color, but it's a definitely no. Which means the same goes for the jacket, which I'll review tomorrow.

Next, the Chiffon Top in Hothouse Floral. I thought the color and print were quite beautiful in person. I tried on a 2, which is my size in the Talitha blouses, and it ended up being too small across the top and shoulders, so the pleats didn't lay quite right.  I didn't have time to try the 4, so will update when I do.

What do you think of these pieces?

Have a fabulous day, and thanks for all the get well wishes!

  1. I'm dying to give that top a try...such a pretty pattern! Why can't all the sizing for skirts be the same, J Crew? Frustrating!! Great reviews! I think everything looks great on you...love that dress on you too!

  2. I think the dress is fantastic and is very flattering on you. I hope the 6 works better for you and you snag it!
I _love_ that blouse. The colors are so so pretty. I'm really tempted by that blouse. We're going out of town this weekend, there's a J.Crew where we're headed, I'll look for it there.
Did you get anything from the Anthro sale? I got a PA on the Up and Away dress and picked up the Native Birds dress and I was able to track down the last Honeyed Life dress as well (for $28!). I tried my luck with the old Bike Lane dress too, but no dice.

    1. Can't wait to see what you like when you stop at JC. I didn't get anything from the Anthro sale, can you believe it?

  3. Love the dress! I know it's gotten some less than fair reviews but it looks great on you! Can't wait to hear the update with the size 6.

    1. Thanks Andrea! I really thought it was flattering, so I'm hoping the 6 is better.

  4. For some reason I don't care for the looks of the hot house print. I have seen the dress on a blog and now the top on you. What is the draw? Maybe it translates better IFL?

Anyway, I think you like Boden...right? Just got a spring preorder email with lots of gorgeous items! 20% off as well. I filled my bag and now just have to wait and think about what I really NEED. No more wants in my closet:) Presale goes until Nov. 9 I believe so will probably wait a bit; at least until after Halloween!

    1. It was prettier in person, I have to say. But I do think it feels more like a spring rollout item.

I'm loving Boden right now! I just went through their spring preview and had an insanely loaded cart from which I had to slowly back away. :) I've been really happy with most everything I've ordered recently. Go by the measurements and you should be pretty safe, though you're good b/c of the free returns (such an awesome thing). Would love to hear what you're looking at! I'll post my picks soon.

    2. Yeah! JCrew has been boring for me lately but I really got into Boden when I lived in the UK. The warehouse was only 20 minutes away from me and I would receive my orders so FAST. Now it is a waiting game but I LOVE their stuff. They used to have great warehouse sales in the UK too. sigh....

  7. I loved the fit of the tweed dress but could not stand the fabric it was like wearing plastic.

    1. I didn't notice a weird feeling, but I honestly was in and out of it so fast. I'll be trying it on again soon to see.

  8. I think the dress is very pretty and I'm on the fence about the skirt (even though it's a pencil, if you can believe it). I'm not a big fan of that floral print. Somehow I would want to see this in the spring/summer, not in the November rollout. Maybe then I would like it better.

    1. YOu know me and pencils, but this one just didn't hit it for me. At this point, I have to insanely love it to take it home. :) I agree about the print -- it feels like a fresh spring print. But the greens do make it festive for the holidays. Then it would be a great transition piece as well!
