j.crew reviews: double-breasted gold button blazer, rugby-stripe boatneck top.

Hi everyone!

My fall/winter color plan is shaping up, and is featuring burgundy and pops of pink, so when I saw this burgundy blazer and the tee in those exact colors, I had to give them a try. Especially since they were both on promo and not on final sale. I happened to see the blazer at a strange promo price of $65 and so ordered it. This was the night before the SHOPNOW extra 30% off sale items, so I contacted my PS and politely asked them to apply the 30% off retroactively. I lucked out and they did so. So, for $45 and some change, I was really excited and hopeful that these two would work out.

Love them both!  The color seems very fresh right now, as it hasn't been in vogue for many years. I tend to associate it with bad 80's mom frocks, but am happy to turn that around, especially as it's a good color with my skin/hair color. :)

A peek at some of my fall color inspiration:

The Rugby-Stripe Boatneck Top is a linen and rayon blend. Boo to rayon, but it feels more linen-y and substantial. It's got a rough-ish texture that might both those with sensitive skin. I really liked the weight of it. It's a boxy shape, but drapes nicely. It's pretty short, which I don't mind, but those of you with long torsos won't like it. The colors are really lovely and fun together. The pink isn't neon, just a gorgeous fuschia and looks pretty true to my monitor's online depiction. The cabernet color is rich and warm. The top is not a perfect match with the blazer color but I think it still works just fine, no need for fully matchy. How cute is it with this little clutch from Anthro (last year)? :)

Next up, the Double-Breasted Gold Button Blazer. I really wasn't sure how I'd dig the double-breasted thing, but it turns out that it looks really cute in this heavier slub cotton knit, both hanging open and closed. It doesn't feel like weird-80's to me, but quite smart actually.  I ordered a small, as they say it is a "slim fit" and I didn't want it to be too tight, and I think it works nicely and will allow me to layer under it well.  Machine washable, yay! I wish the button holes were finished better, but I can live with it. Would I pay full price for it? No, b/c it's just a knit (with some poly in it) and not worth that price by any stretch. Is it worth a nice sale price? Yes. :)

BTW, I thought I'd give you a little peek at a beautiful chair we've inherited that was once owned by Henry Ford. It's an amazing piece of history that is interwoven with my husband's family, which is always fascinating to me. The chair is always to the side of my pictures, but I thought it deserved a highlight.

What do you think of these pieces? What do you think of burgundy coming around again?

J.Crew is currently offering free shipping on $100+ with code SHIP100.

  1. I have been eying that blazer and it looks great on you with the rugby stripe top -definitely adds a little edge to the double breasted look! How wonderful you have a chair with such history. I own several antique chairs from my great-grandmother that I have recovered in modern fabrics and I love the contrast.

    1. Thanks Kristin! It's a cute little blazer and I like it with the top a lot. It's a lovely color for fall and winter.

I love to see antique furniture used, and think it's smart to recover in a modern fabric if it means you'll use it. I have an antique couch from Paris that was my great aunt's that I'd rather not recover, but plan to have a slipcover made to freshen it and make it a bit more child-friendly. :)

    1. Thanks P! I'd definitely go with the XS for you in this one. It's still on a promo price, so it's not final sale -- a good time to try it out! :)

  4. This is a great look on you-and the jeans are so flattering as are these colors. Glad you found something fun. I love having burgundy and berry shades for fall-they look good on nearly everyone-though they are likely to break the bank for me-I'm in need of color and berry shades are my favorites.

    1. I do love these jeans, though they do require a heel, so I'm stocking up on wedges. :) I agree, they are such good colors for most people.

  5. So loving this color-combo and look. Thinking I need to do this...I already have on order the tipi card in "merlot" and have a few pink tees that will look nice but I love the stripe combo.

    1. Love that merlot Tippi cardi, and you can definitely recreate the look with your tees and the cardi! I bet the tee will drop in price if a lot of people dislike the texture. :)

  6. I didn't like the texture of the pullover, so I haven't tried it on yet. The burgundy and pink are so cute on you.

    1. It is an odd texture, but it didn't bother me personally, so I'm ok with it. I think that texture might mean it gets discounted faster. ;)

  7. OMG, I totally decided that this was my next color combo to pursue, too!! I've got the pink down already, and have been debating a bubble necklace knock-off from New York and Company in burgandy!

  8. Do you live in Michigan? I live in Texas but my whole family lives in Clinton Township...I remember always going to the Ford Mansion on field trips and wanting Josephine's playhouse!

    1. Hi Nicole! No, we live in IL, but DH is from Michigan. He has some great memories of the Ford Mansion as well! :)

  9. I like both of those on you, the colors work really well for your skin tone.
I love that blazer, very pulled together but comfy due to the knit. I eyed it for a bit, but the double-breasted style is not a flattering one for my figure.

I love burgundy so I'm glad it's "in" again, though I never really thought of it as "out" to be honest. I have a few pieces from LEC in "Dhurrie" that I'm looking forward to wearing with some navy and the Peacock Amas I got from Talbots. Oh, maybe mustard too, hmmm....

    1. I definitely think the double-breasted thing is very different on everyone. I wasn't sure I'd love it, but in this knit, I do.

I ordered the paper poplin dress in Dhurrie from LEC and it's really cute. The color is definitely a burgundy.

Jealous of the Talbots heels -- my size was sold out alas, before I could make a decision.

    2. I saw that dress on your side bar a few days ago, I had wondered if you grabbed it. Were you planning on reviewing it? It's been sitting in my cart for some time, I haven't yet decided if I want it or not. I certainly don't need it, but it's a great price and the color is lovely.

    3. I did grab it with the recent discount and it's super cute IRL. The color is great, and the style is comfortable and classic. It is a crispt light poplin, so it's not really going to work in the cold months, but I think it's great for fall and spring and will be cute with boots! If you have a Sears or Inlet nearby, you can definitely always return. I usually go with my JC size for Canvas.

    4. Thanks, M! I think it'll work well in my closet and I can see layering it lots of different ways for fall. I'll be ordering it the next time I make a purchase from them.

  10. Gotta ask.... Why do the fashion bloggers always pose pigeon-toed? :)

    1. lol, I know! I am pigeon-toed in every.single.picture up there! I don't know why, honestly. I have a very, very small repetoire of poses, and those sometimes are the best of the bunch. I promise to try to be more adventurous. ;)

  11. Phipis blog: I might try an XXS in the blazer. I wear a 00 or 0 in blazers and tops and the XXS was far more flattering than the XS in this blazer. (I definitely felt it to be more boxy rather than slim fit.)

    1. Thanks Anon for helping out with fit. I do think an XXS might end up being the fit for you you P, so let me know if you try it out. The shape of the blazer is boxy, but the heavy knit makes it drape nicer and the stretch makes it not as boxy as a stiffer wool fabric might (if that makes any sense?).

  12. The rugby and jacket look great on you! Love the chair, too--how neat to have that in your home! I'm loving that burgundy is big this fall. I don't have any tops in that color (don't know why?!), so I'm planning to add one. I really like the short sleeve crepe top in the Cabernet color. It looks like it's already starting to sell out! Only 2 colors left in my size. Looks like the burnished rose is only left in one size. I can't believe it's selling at $110 for rayon! I'm sure sizes will popback, but I always get antsy when I see something selling out--I feel pressured to buy it at FP! Do you feel that way? I think the rayon they are using is better quality than say, F21, but I need to see this top IRL to decide. Still, I don't really want to pay $110 for it! Boden has a similar short-sleeve rayon top for $78, I think? That's a better price, but I really prefer the cabernet color! Sorry to ramble about that top! :P

    1. Thanks kw! I think the crepe top is so cute, and was so annoyed that they made it in rayon. I think it will be discounted and there will be popbacks. There will be other tops in this color for a better price, I'm sure of that! If I see something similar, I'll let you know. :)

  13. Are there any fashion bloggers who wear a size larger than a S? I wear a M and sometimes a L. Yes, I love style! And color. And shoes. And accessories! I love it all
    Enjoy your beautiful blog.
