j.crew navy reviews: ram necklace, valentinas, raindrop lace.

Hello everyone!

I've decided that I'm going to continue my navy love of this summer straight into fall and winter. While black is always an easy classic, navy is actually much more flattering to my complexion. It just hasn't been very en vogue for quite some time, so there wasn't a lot of choice out there. Not any longer my friends! It will be a big color for fall. (See Tory Burch's blue inspiration on Pinterest here.)

I've kept that in mind for most of my recent purchases, trying to pick items that might layer/work well into the cooler months. With the 30% off promo, I ordered the navy Valentinas, Raindrop Lace top, and the (retail-only, boo) double beaded Ram Necklace. I'm very, very happy with all three, I am pleased to report.

First, the Ram Necklace. You know I'm a critter jewelry fan, and was excited to hear they came out with a navy version. Alas, only in store, and neither of my stores got them. Boo. Luckily, I heard about the sale price of it through wonderful JCAs at the Mothership, and promptly put a request through to my online personal shopper. He came through, finding it for about $63 (originally $150 I believe?).

The color is I think supposed to be Casablanca Blue, but it blends nicely with the dark navy Tiered Dot Tank. The navy tones the necklace down, making it quite wearable. The ram has a touch of poppy on top and mint eyes. The necklace is long enough to double wrap fyi.

Next up, the navy Valentinas, which I have been stalking forEVER. It's hard to find a cute navy shoe, especially with a low heel. It's a great dark navy, and a classic. They finally went to sale, and I ordered them in two sizes before final sale kicked in. I know many of you have been going TTS on these, but I must have long toes or something, and the 1/2 size up still worked best for me. They do slip once in a while in the heel, but my regular size was definitely too pinchy, so I'll take the periodic slip (or just stick in a heel pad).

Pricing note -- if your store carried these, they seem to be on sale in stores for $99 before the 30% off.  Sizes are pretty picked over online, but check for popbacks.

Finally, the Raindrop Lace Top, which I think is beautiful in navy (see my review of the pink and bisque colorways here). So happy that I was able to get this one. It's lovely for all seasons and I plan to do some layering with this in the fall and winter. I went with a size 2 on this one, but a size 0 also works for me, so you can go TTS or size down in this one.

I love it paired with a simple contrasting skirt (this is the citron from last year):

And if you were able to score the Caribbean Tweed skirt, it's a pretty combo:

And how cute is that little lace peeking out the bottom?

Layered with jackets in the fall:

Have you tried any of these pieces? Are you thinking about navy for fall?

  1. Thanks for all the reviews and pics, M! Everything looks wonderful on you (as always), and I absolutely love the lace peeking out from the denim jacket. :)

I also love navy, and over the past several years have bought a ton of it. So much so that now there is as much of it in my closet as there is black.

  4. I LOVE the Ram Necklace; it's one of my favorite J. Crew jewelry pieces because it is so fun. Great minds think alike because I grabbed the Navy Raindrop Lace Top during the 30% off too. This top is so versatile. I love all of your styling ideas, as always!

  5. Ahhhh I always ADORE your styling! I love the ram necklace! I almost picked up the ram bracelet but I didn't and of course now I want it!
I am loving navy recently too! I have never been much of a black clothing person, but navy is lovely and as you said, softer against the complexion.
    You look great! :)

    1. Thanks Jeannie! :) I don't do a ton of black near my face either b/c it's just so harsh against my skin, but navy is much better. Have a great weekend!

  6. Great post! I love navy and need to see if my PS can find those valentinas! A little OT, but I love your jeans. What brand? Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks Lizzy! I hope you can find the Valentinas too -- they're really a nice staple. Which jeans? The dark ones are Joe's Provacateur (from Anthro) and the lighter crops are Madewell Skinny Skinny crops (both found on sale in stores - not sure if they're online still?) Have a great weekend as well!

  7. I loooove my navy Valentinas! I was able to score mine for a great deal a few months ago at the clearance center, and since then I have been surprised at how versatile they've become in my wardrobe. Glad you finally got them!

  8. Love all three items! I want the Valentinas so badly... but I am between a 10 and 11. J.Crew needs to bring back size 10.5 The necklace is gorgeous; I wonder why they didn't release it online? They could have sold many more... Thank you for the reviews!

    1. Thanks ajc! I know, the very second I saw them drop to sale, I ordered. My PS then adjusted them to the instore price, which was really great. So if you do catch them online, you might be able to aske about that?

    2. Is your PS online or in-store? I'd love to find a really good one but am strictly a sale shopper.

    3. What was the in-store price of the navy valentinas?

  11. Yes to navy all year round for me now I loathe black, I love all of your choices here. And I rarely wear all of my stupidly expensive shoes now, i think the Valentinas are perfection - must try to get them on Ebay as they area fortune for me.

I hope you can find them -- they would be gorgeous on you. What size are you? I can keep and eye out and if I find them, would be happy to pick them up and ship them out to you.

  12. I love love your navy pieces!
We were sightseeing today here in upstate NY and I wore the Lilah dress with the ram bracelet (the small gold one), gold Chie Mihara sandals + straw Brompton. The Lilah dress is so perfect for these super hot days, I thought of you!
Even though we are on holiday I feel like doing a rain dance, I can't imagine how the farmers are surviving this long without any rain.
    Have a great weekend!

    1. What a perfect outfit for a hot summer day of sightseeing Dani! I hope you're having a wonderful vacation!

Ha, your rain dance (well, in your head) worked -- it literally just started storming as I was reading your comment! I agree, I feel terrible for the farmers. I've pretty much given up on my backyard.

  14. M-how do you like the Fanfare jacket? I've also noticed from previous posts that you own the Prince of Whales blazer from the Crew-how do you like that? Do both these jackets fit TTS?

    Love your blog, BTW!

    1. Hi Hanna! Thanks. :) I love both jackets and think they are both week made. The fanfare definitely surprised me. The Pronce jacket is a classic and I wore it nonunion-stop last year. Thumbs up to both!

    2. M - what size did you purchase in the fanfare jacket? I am between a 0 or 2 in J.Crew blazers. Thanks!

    3. I went with a 4 in this one, b/c the shoulders felt a bit tight for me. I think I'd probably go with a 2 if you're between.

    4. Thank you M! Everything looks fantastic on you

  15. I've always overlooked navy but took a liking to it this year. Guess I picked a good time. I also got the navy valentinas, in my usual size, and they are a little tight but I think they will break in nicely since they are lined in leather. They are already looser.

I love all your ideas, they are so pretty!

    1. Thanks! I do think the Valentinas will break in with the leather.

  16. Oh I am loving all of these looks. WOnder if I called T.O. if they would have that ram necklace? Worth a shot!

I am afraid to order the Valentina until I try them on in person, which won't be for a couple of weeks. I already have navy pumps by 9 west, but really want the green valentinas for fall....

You have sold me on the raindrop blouse - now to search for the popback!

    1. I'd definitely try to find the necklace if you can!

It does seem like most people are good in their regular size for the Valentinas, so you're probably good in that, but you're smart to be careful with FS.

Hope you find the necklace and blouse! :)

  17. Question on the navy Valentinas. Are they very close to black, like JC has sometimes done in the past? Or are they clearly navy? TIA

    1. Hi Gigi! They are dark but I feel they are clearly navy and wouldn't be mistaken for black. They're about like the raindrop lace if that helps? I hope you find them!
