Hello everyone and Happy Easter to those who celebrate!
I love this holiday for many reasons, and one of them is the chance to pull out spring-y dresses. True, it's usually a little chilly, but I don't care. Bright or pastel colors are brought out and worn with abandon.

I've found that the casual-ing down of society has finally infected even this holiday, which used to be known as a time to put on a pretty frock, new shoes and an Easter bonnet. I can only imagine the looks of horror if I scampered into my own church today wearing a hat. I stood out just by wearing a full dress and heels! I think some churches and parts of the country still maintain the hat tradition (does yours? jealous!), but it's definitely in the minority now. In recent years, I've seen jeans at church on Easter Sunday. This morning, the whole family in front of me was in jeans.
For me, this is just a bit sad. If we can't dress up on a holiday, or for an important day for church, when can we nowadays? Just for a wedding? Boo. I miss watching the parade of pretty walk into church. It seems to be now relegated to the 5 and under set. Why? Is it just too much effort to get out of lounge wear? Do people not see dressing for church as a sign of respect?

I totally sound like an old crone right now, don't I? Lol. Ah well. To each their own, right? And just for the record, if it's just you and your significant other and/or kids, eating cereal and chocolate bunnies at home, then lounge wear is perfectly fine! ;)
I'll be wearing my Easter best today! How about you? Am I just a crotchety prissy lady now? lol
p.s. Did you get anything from the J.Crew sale/OURTREAT promo? I'll share my goodies tomorrow! :)

I agree! I didn't wear a dress today because it was cold and we went to church at 8am, but I still dressed nicely. I also make my daughter ALWAYS wear a dress to church, every single week. The other disturbing trend I have been seeing at church are the SUPER, SUPER short dresses on teenage girls. I would prefer jeans ;)
ReplyDeleteOh pants are perfectly lovely! Especially in the cold. I think as long as there's some effort shown, that's what matters. And tiny minis in church just seem wrong.
DeleteI saw a grand total of 3 easter hats in a congregation of at least 300 - sad! I love Easter as well - it is the one Sunday I can go to church and not hear "Oh you are so dressed up!"
ReplyDeleteEaster hats! I was kinda hoping the whole fascinator fascination last spring with the royal wedding would lead to more hat-wearing...
ReplyDeleteI am totally with you- there's something very respectful and fun about dressing up for communal celebrations. I will certainly be dressing up for our easter dinner tonight (though I seem to have either mysteriously broken my toe or developed 19th-century gout symptoms, so not sure what kinda footwear I can pull off!)
Some of the ladies in our church wear Easter hats, but not many (and seemingly more in the 'early' service than the 10:30 sermon that we attend. We always 'dress' for Easter (and for church in general), but I don't always purchase a new dress for myself. But this year I was excited to wear my polka dot Lauren dress (recommended by FFM) for the first time; it felt so feminine with the great fuller skirt! Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteWearing jeans to church is so disrespectful! And those super short skirts, I can hardly stand it!
ReplyDeleteI always had a new dress for Easter growing up. It was so fun and a joyous occasion as it should be.
The way people are dressing now is a real indication of manners, I think it's a shame.
We missed Easter service, we have been a little under the weather. I still dressed up yesterday and so did my daughters. Never miss an opportunity!
Happy Easter to you! No, you're not crotchety, you simply have values. I wore a dress yesterday too, but I do wear pants to church in the winter & skirts/dresses during warmer weather.
ReplyDeleteYes! I placed orders but have to say I'm really annoyed JCrew didn't include the US site. Yet another place to have to check! Some of my less than exciting items ordered: factory sun drenched sweatshirts, my sixth gingham shirt-eek!, re-ordered the factory plaid popover (much better at $34 than $59 or whatever it was f/p), the Sunflower bracelet (love the size of this bracelet), some factory Dorrie skirts to try, the Bandana tee ($20.99!) & Contrast stripe tee (<- may return, trying to curtail tee purchases).
Considered ordering the Tillary tote in canvas stripe for $69.99 but feel kind of guilty since I wouldn't use it so much. I have it now at $99.99 non-fs and love trying it out in front of the mirror (vanity!), then dismissing it as frivoulous since I'd really only use it here & there over the summer. Since I'm having a difficult time parting with it, I'll probably keep it & can live with the $99.99, although I feel it will be obtainable at the lower price during another promo.
I would trade most of these items if I could've had the Cashmere long-sleeve tee in Bright Dahlia. Ordered a dahlia popback & they sent me a dark purple cashmere tee instead of the dahlia. Waah, so sad! I will keep watch & hopefully, hopefully, I'll snag one.
Can't wait to read what you ordered! Have a nice day!
I have to agree with the first comment. I prefer to see teens in jeans, instead of scandalously short dresses! (And I'm 35 yrs. old). I simply cannot believe that conservative-looking, late-40-something parents would ALLOW their daughters to dress the way they do. . . . I'm appalled.
ReplyDeleteI can only assume that maybe they don't regularly attend church, and so don't know the proper decorum. . .

I completely agree that it is both a sign of respect and a reflection of a joyous celebration to be dressed appropriately for church on Easter morning.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on this one... I think it's sad how some people dress when going to church in general, let along on these special holidays... I was not brought up like that, and find it hard to believe others were! Fortunately, the church I went to Easter Sunday was filled with people dressed up, not necessarily in dresses, but at least in dress pants and looking nice. I did see a few people in jeans, like you, some members of the family in front of me. Hope you had a great Easter!
