j.crew review: peplum top in fresco floral sateen.

Last day for the secret sale at la Crew (code SHOPNOW for 30% off sale items). Maybe they'll extend through the weekend?

Today I'll share an unexpected purchase with you. I don't know why I have been obsessing over this top, the Peplum Top in Fresco Floral Sateen. It's a little cray-cray and I never saw it in person. I wanted to wear it with the warm jade green pencil skirt, jeans, and even some shorts with wedges on a summer night out. I have an event to which I'd like to wear it soon. I waffled over it quite a bit, and when it was dropped in price, and then had an extra 30% discount, I bit.

I know, you're probably thinking it wasn't my smartest purchase, and definitely doesn't fit into my shopping plan for the year. That's ok. I give myself a little leeway for items that feel different and special. I was pretty sure my PS would let me return it if it was a disaster.

The top is a Collection piece, and I love it. The floral print is so pretty (although I'm guessing DH will think I look like drapes. Just a hunch.)  A cotton sateen (97% cotton, 3% elastine), with an acetate lining (except for the lower peplum, which isn't lined). Feels wonderful to the touch. It has a side zip and a top button at the back of the neck, making it easy to slip on and off.

The colors are really gorgeous, a mix of jade green (matching up with the warm jade No. 2 pencil skirt), lighter shades of mint (matching the Topiary Viv flats btw), and a pretty navy blue that is neither too dark or too light.

I went with a size 4, b/c I didn't want it to pull too tight across bust or shoulders (I'm a 34B), and didn't want the peplum to hit at a weird spot or be too short. That was the right call. I maybe could have gone with a 2, but I think it would be a close call. There is a wrinkle right at the bust from shipping that will need some steaming out. (The skirt I'm wearing is the No. 2 Cotton Double-serge in warm jade, size 4. Also wrinkled.)

Can it be dressed down for daytime? Mmm, probably not. At least I can't think of a way. (ETA: Like xoxo commented below, it could be worn with some cute shorts during the day!) But it is a pretty, feminine piece that could be perfect for any number of occasions: skinny jeans and heels for a night out, pencil skirt and pumps for work or a shower, shorts and some wedge espadrilles for summer dinner or party with friends.

It's not for everyone, that's for sure. It's a lot of print (a pretty one!), and the peplum's a bit of a trend. If you're really well endowned, the high neck might just accentuate that.

Some styling ideas...

What do you think? Like it? Are you trying it out? Has anyone seen it in stores? Too much for you? Check out yesterday's post for reviews on a ton of JC shoes if you missed it.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I love it! It looks so pretty with the warm jade! I don't think it looks crazy on its own, with the pants it was a bit much. That is a special piece in keeping with the colors of your Milly coat... I can see a whole color story for a holiday revolving around these jade greens and gorgeous blues.
Great purchase, it is so flattering and feminine, and a peplum in my opinion is a classic that never goes out of style, it's very lady-like.

    1. Thanks Dani! I can definitely see that color story -- I'm building up a nice collection of those colors and love them.

  2. It looks really good on you. I am still on the fence about wearing peplum, but maybe I will give it a try. I do think the print on this top is gorgeous.

  3. Completely adore it! It's still a little pricey for me and I'm really not sure about the fit. I'd loooooove to wear it with dark jeans and heels :) Gorgeous splurge!

    1. Thanks Tasia! I took some pics of it with jeans, and they didn't turn out, but it looks great with dark jeans! I'll try to get some new pics taken so you guys can all see. :)

  4. It's nice to see Collection pieces that are well-made and have those extra touches. I think it could be cute with faded jeans or a pair of shorts. With the green skirt and shoes it looks a bit too much mother-of-the-bride IMO. Maybe if the peplum were a bit lower and narrowerer so it is just an accent and doesn't take over the whole top.

    1. I agree, it is a nicely made piece and I'm happy to see that. lol, I see the MOB thing too, now that I'm looking at the pics. I was just all excited about trying on that pretty green skirt. The look could work for a formal/conservative environment/occasion, but as I'm a SAHM, it will likely be used more with my faded jeans. Best to counteract the formality with something a little edgier/casual. :)

  8. Thanks for the review! It looks fantastic on you so I have high hopes for it working out for me as well. I took a major risk and ordered this top the other day - it's a risk for me, even at the sale price, because (1) I rarely wear florals and (2) I have never worn a peplum in my life! LOL. But it seemed like a great way to try out the peplum trend and I think I can get some use out of it continuing into the fall.

    1. Yay, let me know what you think about it when you get it! It was definitely a bit of a risk for me too, so I'm happy with the outcome. If it is a complete disaster for you, I'm sure that you could ask a pleasant SA for a courtesy return. I agree that it is a fun way to try out the peplum and it will transition into fall!

  9. I tried this top when it first came out (Here ) but it didn't work for me. But I think it looks great on you, this is the case when being a little thinner, smaller on top and younger makes all the difference, you can play the irony of big floral in the modern settings, it is lost on me, I am afraid, and I am left with MOB look. It definitely needs some jazzing up and I think the way you styled it in the Polyvore sets does the trick! I remember it being very well made and now the price is right.

    1. How did I miss your review?! I do think bustier women might have a harder time with it -- not so much for the peplum, but b/c of the high neckline and big print. If that makes sense. I figure I can wear it a bit ironic-ly now, and then when I'm much older, I will just go straight to the MOB look anyway. lol!

  10. Not something I would have thought of for myself but it looks very cute on you. Definitely think this would work with some Bermudas and sandals for a casual summer party.

  12. I've tried it on and this will be a tricky fit for the busty. It's doable, though. I couldn't get into the 6, but the 8 worked. I will try to post pics. So many reviews, so little time.

    1. I wondered about bustier working for this one. Would love to see your pics/review of it. Did you love/hate? And I know what you mean -- I always seem to either have a glut of review to do or writer's block.

  13. As long as you don't go head-to-toe in that pattern, I give you two thumbs up on the top. :o)
I can envision you rocking it with a skinny belt and statement necklace to dress it up!

    1. Oh no, worry not about the head-to-toe look for me. lol! I was too tired to really play with the looks, but if I get an itch to do so, I'll add some pics. I think the skinny belt/necklace will be great.

  15. This looks like a true collection piece. The colors and workmanship look great and I'm a fan of the peplum. I love the idea of wearing it with shorts and skinny jeans for a more relaxed look.

    1. I agree that it does feel Collection to me. While I wouldn't have paid full price, I'm ok with this sale price. But watch it go down to $20 in 2 weeks. *snort*

  17. I think I am going to order this. Can I ask what size you take in other JCrew tops? I am a pretty solid 2 in anything silk (i.e. Blythe) and prefer a 4 in most of the long sleeve tops (i.e. boy shirts, perfect shirts). So I am on the fence on what size to order. Thanks!

    1. Hi Sarah, I feel the same in my sizing, so I'm thinking you'd maybe want to go with a 4 like me? HTH a little!
