It's been ages since I've done an Old School J.Crew review. I haven't been trolling ebay as much I guess. While it's still winter (barely, yay!), I wanted to share with you a fabulous old school J.Crew coat from the famous September 2007 Paris catalog, the Dani Stadium Cloth Pea Coat. It's style # 85765. I found two of them fairly recently on ebay for crazy low prices in both red and black (and am still stalking the yellow!), and was so thrilled with them.

They are made from the super warm and well done stadium cloth wool, which I personally think is J.Crew's best coat material. Stands up to time and is really cozy warm, without being crazy heavy and suffocating.
The colors are classic: black, a true red, and a soft, wearable yellow. (Does anyone know if there were other colors?) I can't find a catalog shot of the red colorway.
The style is freaking adorable. The buttons are chunky and really substantial (but not clown-like). They are sewn on quite sturdily, as evidenced by the fact that it's 5 years from the debut and they're still perfectly snug. There are also interior closure buttons.
It's definitely cropped, so keep that in mind if you have a really long torso. (Mine's pretty medium-sized I think? And I'm 5'5".) It has that bit of swing to it, helped along with the cute pleat in the back. The little pockets are in a fun spot and yet are still functional. (Reminds me of putting my hands in a muffler when I was a tiny tot.)
Sizing-wise, I went with a size 4, which is about what I wear in their current coats (although for some recent ones, I have gone down to a 2.). The arm length is great, and there is room for a sweater in both shoulders and arms. I wouldn't size down b/c I wouldn't want it any more cropped.
Unbuttoned, which I don't really do, b/c it looks so wide, even though it looks so cute in the catalog shot. I usually just button the top one if I don't want it fully buttoned.
There you have it, folks. What do you think of the Dani coat? Do/did you have this one? If you can find it on eBay, I highly recommend it. As of right now, I just saw a black one in a size 10 for a great price. (And if you have a yellow, size 4 that you want to sell, let me know! ;)
Since all the spring arrivals are in, you can find some great deals on coat clearances. J.Crew's Majesty Peacoat pops back in sale from time to time, which has a similar lapel. Land's End Canvas has a pea coat in red and in navy on super sale here. Land's End has a spring rain jacket in a similar shape:
Have a great weekend! I'm out of town so might not be around as much!

Oh they look adorable on you, m! I love how you paired them with the striped top, too. Congratulations on two more fantastic Ebay scores...job well done! :)

ReplyDeleteFFM -- Thanks! I was really excited to find these. I had to part with 2 older coats in my closet, but it was worth it. :) Thanks for the note about the comments -- I didn't even realize it! I posted the comment in case other bloggers might not have realized this yet.
ReplyDeleteadorable! I am going to add those to my old school wish list! :)
ReplyDeleteYou totally should -- it's super cute. :)
DeleteYou're welcome M! Have a great day! :)
ReplyDeleteYou as well! :)
DeleteI should be on the lookout for really warm costs on sale since we're headed to Ohio! These look really cut on you!
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely take a look for them before they disappear. Best time to get them. You can also find great ebay deals in the spring and summer when nobody wants to think about cold and snow. :)
DeleteI love your old school posts, and these jackets are super cute. I sometimes shy away from double breasted coats and jackets because I do like to wear them open, and the 'wide' factor is sometimes a problem. I can see from the catalog shot that she is holding in the width with her arm and elbow...tricky, but not something we can walk around doing on a constant basis!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love the old school posts as well. Haha, yes, no way I can walk around like that all the time. I probably do have it open now and then, and really, I don't care too much if it looks wide. :) But if I do think about it, I'll do just the one button.
DeleteI should have one of these coats! lol, someone at JCrew likes the name Dani, remember the Dani dress of this past winter?
ReplyDeleteI love these on you, they are so pretty. Have a great weekend!
I totally thought of that too! Thanks, it's nice to have a couple casual but still pretty coats, as opposed to my long, dressy ones or the down. :) Hope you had a lovely weekend!
DeleteGreat post! Thanks for the Lands End and LEC picks.
ReplyDeleteI just ordered a cropped peacoat (in tomato) from Gap. They're offering 30% your entire order until 3/11 with GAPFRIENDS.
Thanks Mei! I haven't seen that coat IRL yet -- let me know how it works out! The 30% off is a great deal -- thanks for sharing the tip. :)
DeleteVery cute on you M!
ReplyDeleteI found the Tuesday Trench from 2008 on eBay this year and LOVE it. I'm now stalking that in other colors. Ah the endless eBay quests. What else would I do with me time??
Thanks! Ooh, love the Tuesday Trench. Such a great score! Ebay scouting is just kind of fun, isn't it? :)
Deletei don't remember it in red (in the catalog), maybe that was an in-store only color?
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was, that makes sense. Otherwise I would think I'd have found a pic somewhere.
DeleteMy heart skipped a beat when I saw your post because I missed out on the red one in my size a couple months back. :(
ReplyDeleteThey are freaking adorable, and adorable on you.
And Dani, I thought the same thing about your name and the coat and the dress ;)
I'm still pining for one in whatever was the smallest size ...
Thanks! Boo on missing out on that one red one. I have seen them pop up now and then, so hopefully you can score one soon. I'm not sure what the smallest size was -- does anyone remember?
DeleteI love this on you! Adorable. Now I want to look for one on ebay myself but as a newbie, can you give me any advice on the best way to locate this particular coat? I want to make sure I'm getting this cute cropped one but my search results had tons of matches. Thanks! Love your blog by the way...
ReplyDeleteSara
Hi Sara, thanks so much! For this one, I had just been looking up my size in J.Crew and happened to come across a black one that actually had the name on the listing. After that, I thend found the red one on accident, and it had a terrible picture, but I could make out the same matching details as my black one. I don't think there have been any others with the same exact look to it -- JC always does something different with the peacoats it seems. So I'd say clip the catalog pics and then if you're perusing ebay and come across one that might be it, do a comparison. You could also ask about that pleat in the back if they don't have a picture of it. If you ever see one and are unsure, send me a quick message and I can check it for you!
DeleteSmart move getting two of them. So classic and very cute on you!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Of all things, I don't have a plain black coat that's not dressy, so that was my first one. And I loved but missed out on the red majesty this year, so when I found that one, I snapped it up. Hooray!
DeleteLove them too, but yellow is the one I want. Great Ebay finds, I wish I was better at Ebay scouting; everyone seem to be able turn some treasures but me.:)
ReplyDeleteThe elusive yellow one! I nevere see that one, alas. I swear, the ebay thing can totally be the luck of the draw, and/or spotting the goodies in a terrible photo. :)
DeleteThe red is adorable!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Red is such a cheery color in winter. :)
Deletewow- nicely done!! I should really step up my ebay game- I haven`t been on it for awhile actually, with just a few half-hearted regular saved searches...
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks! I know, I've been out of the ebay thing this year, but it's fun to stick my head in there once in a while and see if I can get lucky. :)
DeleteI love the Stadium Cloth coats. I have one from a few years ago and just LOVE it. It's so warm and just feels and looks great on.
