j.crew reviews: raindrop lace top, city mini in line & No.2 eyelet skirt

Hi everyone,

Popped into J.Crew yesterday, and had a chance to peruse the new pretties. Definitely some cute pieces! Loved the bright colors.  Disappointed in some poly linings and too-short dresses. Still, overall, I really liked the vibe -- I was feeling that preppy with a twist I'd been missing for a while with the Crew.

First up, the lovely Raindrop Lace Top ($110) and City Mini in Linen ($79.50)

The top comes in my personal favorite, neon azalea, as well as navy and apricot mist (champagne). I snatched up the pink, along with the City Mini in Neon Azalea (from a recent rollout). Both pinks are a true bright pink, but don't look neon-y to me IRL. Looove the color.  I love it just alone, but if it's too much for you, it would be a great pop of color under a cardi or blazer.  I grabbed a size 2 (what I've been wearing in all of their pullover tops/blouses, e.g. Talitha), and that was the right fit, so it's TT(your JC)S.  The lace is very pretty, not exceedingly delicate, and goes all around the top (not just the front). I love the bottom eyelash lace detail. No zip, just pullover. I didn't have issues pulling it on, like I sometimes do with their tops. The shell is 70% cotton and 30% nylon, and is lined in polyester, which is so annoying, especially at this price. I still love it, content issues aside.

The city mini looks like the wool one, as far as shape. I pulled a 6 in the skirt, in order to get a little bit more length and the ability to pull it down a bit when needed. That was the right call as well. I actually like the two pinks together for a night out (my trip to Vegas?) -- nobody will miss you, that's for sure. You can also see a peek at the striped ballet flats -- super cute.

The khaki color didn't work very well with my fair skin, but it's lovely, and a more subtle color. I didn't see navy at my store, but you probably wouldn't see the lace detail quite as much (unless it's over a contrasting colored skirt/pants)

I also loved the new No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Ultra Eyelet in chili.

It definitely reads red to me, not orange, just in case you're wondering. I've been hoping for a red pencil for a while. Runs TTS.  I can't justify another pencil skirt at FP, so if it makes it to sale, maybe I'll consider. Whoops, I accidentally deleted two of my better pictures.

What do you think of these two pieces? I have more reviews coming tomorrow!

  1. You look so great in pink! I'm loving the neon azalea too...so much so that I actually bought the tippi in that color at full price...something I hardly ever do! Love your picks and am so glad you brought the lace tee home with you.

  2. I bought the pink lace top as well and also found it to run true to my JC size. I also got the striped jacket and the longer leopard-ish print skirt.

  3. Thanks for reviewing the lace tee, I was curious about the length and it looks like it can be tucked or left out nicely. It is disappointing that it's lined in polyester. I love the idea of it so may have to try it. The pink on pink is cute with the black & white flats.

  4. The red eyelet skirt is lovely. Wish it came in other colors, like a purple, gold, or orange. I just can't do reds for some reason. Thanks for the reviews! :)

  5. You wear pink so well! Next time I am in store (maybe this weekend) I have to try that lace tee. I bypassed it last time, but after seeing it on you I am reconsidering.
Thanks for great reviews, like always!

  6. Oh, and the red eyelet looks great on you. I found it snag in the hips, and it is rare for me.

  7. Thank you for reviewing the lace tee. It is beautiful. I have a feeling it won't make it to sale and I think despite the poly lining, it is worth full price.

  9. Thanks for the review of the lace top! I was in my local store yesterday and must have missed it...or they don't have it. Great to see your photo of it with jeans, also, because you can get a better sense of it's length that way! You do know how to wear pink well!

  10. I look like death in khaki, oh for golden skin.
I'm going to be in real live J Crew stores in 3 weeks, I hope the Madelene dress is still there.

  12. Do you feel the raindrop lace top would look funny if it's more fitted? I mean, do you feel it's supposed to have a more loose fitting feel? I waiver b/t a size 0 and 2 even in their blouses depending on the cut. Thanks for your reviews!
