j.crew review: rugby-stripe dress

Hi everyone!

I totally forgot that I tried on the Rugby-Striped Dress about a week or so ago. Thought I'd post the pics while they are having the 20% off online promo (FABFEB).

J.Crew at ShopStyle

I grabbed a size small, thinking it looked like it might give me a bit extra length. I liked the size on me, but that might be due to those stubborn extra holiday pounds that won't disappear.

It's cute, reminiscent of the Maritime and other stripey dresses of last year and this year. I like the color combo and the gold buttons. It was a nice mid-weight -- feels like a polo. Bit short, but not terribly so. (I think it's probably similar to the Maritime length, actually.) I could still run errands in it. It's a very easy-going piece that I really liked. I didn't love it, so I think it will have to stay at the store.

ETA: Once this hit a sale price, plus a 30% off promo, I snagged this. Looking at the pics and taking your advice, I went for the size small. It is perfect! So just wanted to update here. I didn't notice much length difference either. Also, I love it even more now, trying it on at home.

Terribly blurry, but you get the idea. Next time I'm in store, I'll get some better pics and update!

What do you think? Is this one on your wishlist?

  1. i love it. i actually bought it yesterday, and sized up to a medium, since it's 100% cotton and i want to wear as a dress, so i like the little extra room. i think it is well made, and my ps said this most likely will not ever go on sale, and that it is a best seller!

  2. I'm not sure if this one is on my wishlist ... is the knit just like the maritime dress? I loved the heaviness of the maritime. I don't make the effort to drive 25 minutes to the store so I really appreciate your reviews.

  3. It is very cute and looks great for a casual Spring day, but I wish it tucked in a little more at the waist. It might cut down on what looks like a somewhat boxy silhouette.

The dress on the model at the top looks much more fitted, but, alas, her dress was probably pinned in the back.

  4. LRA -- I think it's probably best to size up on this one (I took an XS in the maritime), for the extra room, like you said. I do think this will sell pretty well.

tiffany rose -- No, it's not the smooth knit of the Maritime. It's more like a textured polo shirt, KWIM?

Jessica -- It is a straight dress, but it does grab your curves a tiny bit I'd say. I'm sure the model one was pinned!

  5. shoppingwithM, I have this in a size small too, and think you should consider the x-small. You have such a cute figure and I think the size small leaves too much fabric on your lower half. Jessie, another JCA who has a blog, commented on wearing it with tights and flat boots, which sounds like it would look really cute on you. In the end it is up to you but I wanted to add my two cents since (cents since, since cents, ugh!) I am in the same boat as you - size up or stay with regular size. :)

  6. I love this and was just hoping that someone would review it. Is the fit like the maritime? I think it's so cute and definitely something I would live in during spring/summer.
    Thanks!

  7. JustVisiting -- Hm, maybe you're right (and thanks by the way *blush*). I think I'll be trying it on again to see if it does make a difference. (will post pics if I do!) Thanks for the idea!

Lizzy T -- I don't know if it compares in fit to the Maritime, b/c it's just a different fabric. I think it probably runs a touch smaller than the Maritime though, b/c I have an XS in the Maritime. HTH!

  8. Thanks for reviewing this and the IRL photos. Its cute on you and I agree with Just Visiting, you could likely size down unless the length is too short.

I ordered this as part of the promo order today. I think it's pretty cute and although short it's fine for when a short dress will work. If it's too loose on the bottom I may have it tailored because I think if it's more fitted it doesn't look as short as a looser short dress, if that makes any sense.

BTW, any chance you would be willing to put my blog in our blog list? I'd really appreciate it but of course, I understand if you don't.

  9. Thanks! I wondered if this one was more straight. Have you seen the new Lands End Spring/Summer dresses? Some very cute striped ones!

  10. xoxo -- I totally know what you mean. I'm going to try sizing down and see how that works out. Ack, how do I not have your blog on my roll? Will add asap! :)

Lizzy T -- Yes, lots of cute things at LEC!

  11. I do know what you mean, shopwithm, think that texture is called pique. It will be a pass for me as I prefer the feel of smooth or slub cotton knit. In addition, just noticed the slits that make a short dress even worse for me to wear. :(

  12. tiffany rose -- pique, duh! That's it! Totally blanked. Yes, the slits do annoy me a bit.
