j.crew review: a little froggy bracelet.

Hello all!

I know the little bugs and critter jewelry are not for everyone. Some of the old-school pieces are great, and some a little over-the-top. But I like the tongue-in-cheekiness of them. I think it's funny to have a frog on my wrist.

I didn't like the tortoise/yellow (light citron) colorway of the Frog-clasp Bracelet that I saw in store, so almost missed this turquoise version (daquiri ice) online, until a Polyvore friend highlighted it.

First of all, it is not of the same caliber of the critter jewelry of the past. The actual critter seems pretty close, but it's the resin (plastic) links that feel iffy. Like, if they break, this thing is toast. And I'm not sure I can say this isn't going to snag on something and just *pffft* fall into shambles.

That said, it's so cute. I love the colors. The frog is adorable (and is actually the clasp). Is it worth full price? Mmmm...nah. Is it going to make it to a sale? Who knows?  I still haven't seen this color in stores, so it might be an online only item. (Have you seen it?)

Here are some pics:

What do you think? Are you a critter-on-your-wrist kind of gal?

p.s. I just wanted to rave quickly about the Shearling Macalister Wedge Boots. They are so awesome and comfortable. I've worn them with skinnies rolled up, and with my too-long bootcut jeans, and they are cute and warm and super walkable. I wear an 8.5 outside of J.Crew and sized up to a 9 and it's a perfect fit. Anyway, just wanted to mention, since they keep popping back.
Have a wonderful day!

  1. The colors on the frog bracelet are very pretty, perfect for spring. A friend gave me the giraffe necklace a few years ago and I wear it occasionally but I usually go for more subtle jewelery.

Are the McAllister's real shearling? Are they fully-lined or just the part around the opening, where it will show?

  2. My little frog guy is supposed to arrive today...but I got the other color as I thought it looked kind of tortoise-y. Sounds like I may be disappointed. :o/

  3. xoxo -- I have the giraffe necklace too, but you're right, I don't wear it as much as my simple jewelry. They are shearling I believe and it's fully lined inside.

My4Boys -- Oh, let me know what you think! I like the frog on that one, but I didn't love the light color of the tortoise links. I wisht they'd have done them dark.

  4. I don't know. I always previously associated critters on anyone with old ladies, but I want to keep an open mind. M, I saw this bracelet in store yesterday and immediately bought it. The picture does it no justice, it is absolutely gorgeous:

  5. I love this bracelet...it has such personality, yet is still sophisticated! It reminds me of some of the Kate Spade jewelry in that way.

My store does not carry the blue color, but they did have one of the yellow (which I also love)...it sold quickly weeks ago, so I am watching this one online now.

  6. I saw the yellow version in store on Sunday and now I'm not sure I like them. I'm with you, the critter part looks good, but the links look cheap. Thanks for the detailed review!

  7. Charlotte Sometimes -- Haha, I know what you mean. Must see that bracelet IRL! Thanks for the tip.

krb -- It does have that KS whimsical feel to it a bit. They do seem to be selling fast in stores.

Closet Crisis -- I know, the links just feel a little unstable to me. I would have preferred the beads of old, or a heavier metal link. It's still very unique and cute though. Hmmm.

  9. I also ordered this bracelet and received it today. I feel just like you do - probably not worth full price quality wise, but it's such a fun and unique piece, so I'm going to keep it. I, too, was disappointed about the plastic links, but I don't think it looks cheap on the wrist. And, although I didn't like the tan links on the necklace version, for some reason, I really like the color of the bracelet. For me, it's a keeper!

  10. Moda -- Thanks! I'm glad you love yours, it's a keeper for me too.

ifky12 -- I agree, it's fun and unique and is a keeper. I liked that colorway better on the bracelet too. I just saw a giraffe one in store now, with dark brown liks.
