No. 2 Double Serge Pencil Skirt in wool -- Viridian Green is gorgeous!!! The color is to die for and IMO is the best piece of fall that I've seen so far. Yes, it's lined! (lol, there was a lot of hoopla about the lining, and in the end, thank goodness, it worked out.) It's a lovely cool greenish peacock color that I'm in love with completely. It's not quite green and it's not quite turquoise, but works with both of those colors. The fit is TTS compared to last year's wool pencil (I took a 4). My PS said the viridian green is going to be a hard color to get. Like ochre in store last year (at least in our area), it's flying off shelves/online. My store said the waiting list for the next batch is almost filled. But we'll see, could easily be just a gambit to make everyone pay FP. ha.
I've taken pictures with various pieces (Casbah blouse, Anthro's A-bit-unruly top, Sun-drenched Sweatshirt, Leslie Lace Shell, Boy Shirt in Quincy Tartan -- all of which look great with it!), and also laid it out with some different shoes, scarves, sweaters in greens and turquoise, so you can kind of see the shade of it better.
Love the Boy Shirt in Quincy Tartan -- the colors are vibrant and beautiful. Love, love, love. I went with a 4 (my usual).
Wool Flannel Schoolboy Blazer -- I tried both the Decadent Red (not in stores yet) and Heather Caramel, which is in store. The red is definitely more red than the orange/cerise I originally imagined it to be, but that's not a bad thing. I think it's a really striking color and that's the best thing about it. I also love the camel color (and will share pictures shortly -- I just got soooo hot trying stuff on). However, all that being said, it definitely doesn't feel nearly as luxe and thick as it should for $188. I mean, I can see that it will likely wrinkle, which is just...urgh. I drive around all-the-live-long day, and I'd be pissed if this jacket is a hot mess in the back when I get out of the car. The same I'm sure would go for those of you sitting at desks.
Pros: lovely color, fitted schoolboy cut (although it might be too short for some torsos), gold buttons. Cons: wool flannel material is just lacking. Boo. So is it worth FP? I don't think the camel is and I'm on the fence about the red, only b/c it might sell out before it hits a sale. Here are a bunch of pics, wearing with just a plain white tee, and then with a cashmere tee in an orange color that would work (most of my sweaters are packed away). I also took some pics of the Factory Tortoise Cuff and Link necklace (which can be double wrapped BTW).
If I decide not to keep it, I can still somewhat recreate that gorgeous catalog look with my Elsa Jacket, as I styled on Polyvore here:

YAY! I've been waiting with bated breath for your post all morning :) The skirt is just lovely. I'm so on the fence about going ahead and buying it. I can NOT be buying anything right now with us buying our house at the moment, but since it's on backorder I might be okay! Question: do you think the color is different enough from the Nightfall blue from last year to warrant having both?
ReplyDeleteI was interested in the Schoolboys at first, but I think I might try out the Hacking jacket instead since I have so many schoolboys in different colors. Plus, the vibrant flame color is calling my name loudly! If you don't think the quality is up to par, don't settle for it just because you think it might sell out. I have a feeling that with the quality issues everyone is reporting, it will probably make it to sale!
Thanks, as always, for the reviews! :)
AppGal -- I have the nightfall blue and definitely think this is a totally different color. I think it screams your name, honestly. With your educator discount, I think it's worth it. I'd have a PS put you on the waiting list for the next batch. Since it's not coming for a bit, you'll have some time to really decide, you know? And you're totally right -- not going to settle for the schoolboy, esp at full price. It's actually already in the bag, ready to return, sadly. I have higher hopes for the hacking jacket this year, and will be trying out that gorgeous blue. Thanks for your insight! (And can't wait to hear about house progress -- so exciting!)
ReplyDeleteWonderful sense of styling. Loved the teal/cobalt blue combinations, complete with teal shoes. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteM, posting quickly because I'm in a rush, but when you say TTS compared to last year's skirt, do you mean that it is the same as last years, or that it is TTS and last year's was not? It looks fab!
ReplyDeleteHi M!
ReplyDeleteLove your look. I look forward to seeing more of your posts!

I LOVE this skirt. It is my favorite purchase of the season! And, I love the combinations you put together, as always! What do you think of the leopard print pencil skirt? I actually like it, but I think I may be alone!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love that skirt and am so happy for your review! What a relief that it's lined; there was quite a fuss about that in the blogosphere. Thanks for showing all the great combinations that are possible with the color. Now I just have to decide whether to get this skirt from J Crew or the very similar one being offered right now in the new fall Boden line.

Professor -- Thanks! :) I dearly love the Juliet peacock heels. It's crazy how many ways I've found to wear them.
ReplyDeleteHexicon -- You're right, I phrased that weirdly. It fits TTS. I got a 4 in last year's skirts and this is a 4. They feel like they fit the same to me, so I'd say stick with your normal size.
sweatergirl -- Thanks! :)
rynetta -- Definitely my favorite as well. :) I had high expectations for the leopard skirt b/c they do the print so well, but I have to say I was disappointed that it looked a bit washed out IRL. It's a nice longer length and flattering, but I just wish they'd have stuck with a vivid print. Would LOVE if they'd do a wool version -- now that I'd be on board with!!
greatblueheron -- I think the skirt will work with so many things. Nightfall blue sweaters from last year will be gorgeous with it. I also saw the Boden skirt (if anyone hasn't, I posted it in my previous post) and would love to see a comparison. The Boden is a "mini" (but nothing like a JC mini, ha), so it could be a more casual version while the JC one is more work-appropriate.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the quality of the wool blazer. The camel is quite blah looking, and so is the grey.
ReplyDeleteHi M,
ReplyDeleteI love this skirt on you, and those shoes! So pretty!
oh thanks for this! I'm still uncertain on the sizing of the pencil skirt for myself- I found last year I was perfectly between 2 sizes! But I will definitely be getting the flame option as I have a bright green pencil skirt already.
ReplyDeleteI think I prefer your polyvore recreation with the elsa jacket anyway- the extra detail in the coat looks better!!
I've never bought any of J Crew's pencil skirts but this one seems to be the one that everyone is raving about. And the colors are amazing! This peacock colored one has to be my favorite. I'm very tempted to pick one up. I love all the looks you put together for the skirt. It'll be very versatile in your wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteAwesome review, huge thanks for posting all these photos!! The green colour looks fantastic on you. I am beyond envious of the JC green patent mary janes - I missed out on those and still wish I got them. I'm disappointed to hear that the quality is lacking in the schoolboy blazer - I guess I will have to look beyond J. Crew for a wool blazer this fall.
ReplyDeleteRose -- Disappointing, boo. Will have to find my perfect camel blazer elsewhere!
ReplyDeleteDaniBP -- Thanks!! :)
thatdamngreendress -- Love the flame! I have the bright orange one from years ago and love it. It really cheers you up on a chilly fall/winter day! Thanks, I agree that I think the Elsa will work perfectly well in the recreation. Once I pull out those sweaters, I'll give it a whirl and snap some pics. ;)
Jenn -- Their wool pencil skirts are my favorite things, so I definitely recommend them. I dress them down and wear them casually, but they're perfection for an office environment too. Let me know if you get one and like it!
The skirt looks awesome on you and love the shoes you paired it with, I bought the red/orange one and am still waiting on the green.
ReplyDeletethanks so much for sharing info on the wool schoolboy it will be a pass now for sure.
Thanks for the review. I have the skirt in my cart but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm hoping for a 20% off coupon and hope it sticks around.
ReplyDeleteLove the polyvore with Elsa jacket. :-)
It's like almost monochromatic heaven! I love the same color scheme in the first photos! I really need to just bight the bullet and buy a few j crew pencil skirts. My closet is definitely lacking basics.
ReplyDeleteThe green skirt is beautiful and lucky you for having so much to go with it, I have zilch in those tones otherwise I would give it a go but I'd need shoes and tops, humph.
ReplyDeleteThe jacket does look a bit cheap for the money doesn't it?
Thanks for the reviews. I love your style and color palate. I love blues, greys, and purples myself.
ReplyDeleteThe description on the new blazers, all describe an updated slightly shrunken fit. Even the Classic Navy School Boy is shrunken now. The only jackets not shrunken is the Hacking and Cord blazer.
I'm only really interested Houndstooth blazer and maybe the Velvet in Bristol Blue. I would love to have a cord blazer, but I'm not digging the current colors available.
I heard the new Velvet blazer is leaning towards oversized, as opposed to the previous season's too small fit. Hopefully will get more reports soon.
Hi, I am a stay-at-home mom and LOVE the pencil skirt in Viridian Green and the Quincy Tartan shirt paired together. If I were still working, I would purchase this in a second, but I am so torn, because I don't know where I would wear it other than grocery shopping, play dates or just running errands....is that ridiculous? Could I find places to wear this outfit as a stay-at-home mom? I need reassurance. LOL
ReplyDeleteAnon -- I'm a SAHM too and will definitely be wearing these two pieces! Pair it with some boots and a cardi and I think it is a great outfit. You can totally pull it off running errands. :)
