j.crew new arrival pics!

Hello everyone!

I had a chance to pop into the Crew today and try on a bunch of the new rollout. I was really happy with a number of the new pieces. Here are some pics!

Katie Colorblock and Eyelet Camis -- These were cute, but they weren't super wow for me. The colors for the colorblock cami were pretty muted and not uber-flattering on me. The eyelet was really pretty. I like the shape of both, although did feel pretty exposed. I can't tell if that's just b/c it's winter and it takes me a while to remember how it feels to not wear 100 layers? These were a size 2, which felt right to me. Bonus, bra strap holders!

Gingham Vintage Schoolboy Shirt -- Oh, loved this in the melon. Adorable. The blue was almost a light gray, so not a good color for me. I can't remember if I took a 2 or 4, but am thinking I did a 4?

Perfect Shirt in Schoolboy Madras -- Hello, cute! Totally old-school preppy, JC brought back the plaid in really nice earth tones. Pricey alas, at $89.50. This is a 4, and sorry, it's over the colorblock cami, but it fits TTS.

Madras popover -- I liked this online, but loved it in person. The colors are bright and beautiful. Nice and light and easily can be worn through summer. My PS said it seemed to run small in the shoulders, so I went with a small in this one and it was a great fit.

Tea-stained Dobby Dress -- Love!! So, so cute. Coral-y modern red-ish dots on a deep ivory. Cotton, pullover, no zip. I took an XS. There is an XXS available. Somewhat loose at the neckline, but not enough for me to size down. This is a perfect dress for anything -- running errands, dinner out, whatever! I belive it was priced at $88.

Amory Floral Castaway dress -- Such a great thow-on-and-go dress! A substantial cottony knit (didn't look at material) in ivory with a pretty coral floral print. Nice pockets. This one ran big in the armholes, so I went from this 2 (shown) to a 0 and it was perfect. Hits at a nice place -- not too short, hooray! The PS and I were thrilled to see a bit more length on skirts/dresses.
ETA: They have a Factory version that is very similar. When I was there it was priced at $70.

Stripe Lace-up Tee -- This was just ok for me. Maybe I'm on stripe overload, haha. This was an XS and what I'd take in it. They didn't have the pink version in store.

Cecilia Dress -- Rats, this one was a total bust for me. Way too long for me, hitting well below my knees, and just too much volume. Overwhelmed me for sure. Loved the orange color. I sized up in it to a 4 and the top felt perfect. So runs a touch small.

Amie Maxi Dress -- I had to try this one on, b/c it looks so effortless. Super cute on, and the XS fit perfectly. And pockets! The issue...the material is so thin, there is no avoiding VPL. We talked about possibly doing a slip, but both agreed that just defeats the purpose of easy summer dressing. But darn, it's cute. What do you guys do for that situtation? And it hit a PERFECT length on me (5'5") for flat sandals.

Crinkled Silk Caspia Dress -- Very pretty print, and I liked how it fit, although I can see that waist possibly being an issue for some. It looked cuter IRL than in this pic, now that I look at it. I tried a size 2 and it fit TTS for me. It's an effortless dress once again, and I liked the length. Would be appropriate for a dinner out in the summer, but since it's silk, not so much for regular day wear.

Jenny Dress -- Gorgeous color, loved. Another easy toss-on dress, and is definitely sale wishlisted. Way too pricey at $78.

Paisley pencil skirt -- Very cute little pencil skirt! Fit is TTS. I have the orange and cream pencil skirt from a year or two ago, so this is a pass for me, but it's really nice. Weightier cotton, which I like. I believe it was $118.

Madras bermuda shorts -- I went with my usual shorts size for JC, size 4, and they fit perfectly. I didn't expect to like these at all on me, but I weirdly did, a lot! Instead of looking like a grandpa, they were super cute. Not for $64.50, but if they go to sale, they're wishlisted.

Big Daddy tee (above) -- This was in the sale section for $15, and since it had the orange (coral? modern red?) and navy, a fab combo, I tried it on as well. Cute.

What do you think? See anything you like/love?

  1. M: I saw Amie Maxi Dress in store yesterday! It looks great (hope you got it.) The length is perfect on you. I'd love to get the light gray one, but I am 5'9. It will be way too short on me :(

  2. I went to the crew today too M - great minds think alike! AND I totally bought the cream dress with the reddish dots on the spot! It was that much of a love...:)

thanks for all the reviews, as always!

  3. Thanks SO much for sharing these reviews! As always, you look great in everything!!! I love the Madras plaid shirt and the paisley pencil skirt--I must have both items! I have the Madras popover, and I love it! Thanks again!

  4. I love a blouson waist -- I was excited about the Amie dress too until I saw it was strapless. Argh. I see a lot of empire-type shapes for spring, and alas, those don't flatter me.

I want that madras shirt in a very bad way. It WILL be mine, but not at $89.50. I am patient and cheap -- a deadly enemy of the Crew indeed. :P Thanks for sharing the pics & info!

  5. I just found your blog through your comment on JCA. I rarely get to my local JC and usually just buy on-line, so your reviews are very helpful. It's great to see how the items look in real life.
    Thanks

  6. You found some cute things!!! I love the Gingham Vintage Schoolboy shirt and the blue cotton tank dress on you! I need to head over to their site and see what's new...I haven't looked for a bit.

  8. Thanks so much for the reviews.
Love the dotted dress, I wonder when it will show up online?
Cecelia Dress running small, wow. When was the last time that happened at JCrew? It does look surprisingly long.
Love that Maxi dress on you, but agree wearing a slip takes the point away from it. Maybe wear it as a swimsuit cover-up?

  9. You are right the Cecilia was not good for you - But so weird... because we take more or less same sizes. Must be just body type. The shorter dresses looked really cute on you! Wish I could do that length

  10. I'm so frustrated by J Crew--again! I had high hopes for the spring line. It sounds like all their dresses you have to size down. I think it's ridiculous. I know I'm really small, but I can wear clothes from other stores. Like the dotted dress...if the top is loose on you in the xs, there's no way the xxs will work on me at a 30A! And armholes being too big and the waists being all funky...frustrating!! And WTH on the thin material of the maxi dress? No excuse--esp. with their prices!! I need a dress for a Sept. wedding and I'm sure it won't be from J Crew. I like the plaid tops, but again...the prices! *sigh* Sorry for the vent! I love that you do so many reviews for us--big thanks! :)

  11. Can you share the link or item number to the madras plaid shirt. It may be in store only as I can't seem to find it online. I found the madras popover easily but couldn't find the plaid. Can you help?

  12. BTW - LOVE the madras plaid long sleeve top.

  13. Lovely. Thanks for posting this. I really love the eyelet cami, but you are right too exposed & low-cut to wear alone. I would have to wear a cami underneath, so what's the point? I don't recognize that multi-colored melon schoolboy shirt, I think it's super cute. I also Madras in store, and thought it very vibrant and pretty.

  14. Thanks for all the reviews and pics...lots of cute things! The Dotted dress and Sheath dress are super cute! Too bad the Cecilia didn't work for you. I ordered it on Sunday but haven't received it yet to know if it's going to work for me or not...fingers crossed it does though.

I wear slips all year long and don't really find them to be bothersome at all. I actually think they make garments hang much smoother, plus the fabric is always cool and silky on your skin. If you don't want to wear a slip, would sizing up possibly help with the VPL on the Amie?

  15. I just tried the Cecelia in that same color and fell in love, I think it rans TTS but you are probably smaller than me on the top. On the other side the polka dots one looked terrible on me (tried the XS and I didn't "fill" it but I think that the XXS that they didn't have in the store would have been too high-waisted for me). I agree that the maxi-dress looks great on you, (I would probably wipe the floor in it) you should get it for your vacation. BTW, what's VPL?

  16. I have and LOVE the Madras popover too! I haven't seen any of these other items yet and I was just there on Sunday so they must have just arrived! Looks like I need to go back again cuz I'm liking some of those dresses and the gingham shirt! :-P Hurry up SpRiNg!

Thanks for sharing- your reviews & photos are always very helpful!!! =)

  18. Great pics! I also went to a store today and tried on some of the same things. LOVED the pencil skirt but I don't need it. The Cecilia dress actually worked on me and I loved it, but I agree that it overwhelms your small frame! Darn!

  19. pumpkin -- The Amie is really cute, I just couldn't pay $98 for it. I'm hoping it makes it to sale!

kater -- Ha, great minds think alike. Love that dotted dress!

rynetta -- I adore all the madras! The popover is total and complete love!

elaine -- Strapless can be hard, but I felt like this one looked really chic. It also hit up high on the chest and seemed to stay, so that was the bonus. Yes, the price for the madras was quite high. The PS thought it might sell out, but we'll see.

  20. Maryeb -- Thanks and welcome!

Jenni -- Thanks, I loved both as well. I'll have to wait for that tank dress on sale, b/c almost $80 is too much for my blood. Some of these pieces haven't hit online yet, fyi (that's why no links).

Jan R -- Thanks, and that gingham will look adorable on you!!

DaniBP -- It seems to be a few days/week before they hit online, so hopefully it will hit soon. I might try the slip with the Amie maxi, I loved it that much. (but only on sale) Also, it looks like others have felt the Cecilia ran TTS, so it might just be that it's best on a certain body type or height?

milljcrew -- I know, right? I'm laughing at the pic of me in it right now -- it just looks wrong. Isn't the madras so cute? :)

Amy -- No worries, vent away! The vanity sizing is really pretty crazy, b/c they're sizing out people like you. argh! Might be worth just trying some things out just to see, but that dotted one probably will be too big on you, sadly.

Kathryn -- Some of the pieces haven't hit online yet, so I've linked to everything I could so far. I'll add links as soon as I see them posted -- hopefully soon!

Wolfy -- Thanks, yes, the eyelet was really pretty, but for my mommy life, I'd probably have to layer a light shirt over it or something to feel comfortable. Alas. The plaids are really pretty in person!

  21. FFM -- Thanks! I so hope the Cecilia works for you! It's really a darling dress and I wish it fit me right. Ok, I'm taking your advice and trying the slip with the dress -- so would you do a long slip? knee-length? I'm clueless with slips. I don't think I could size up -- it's more just that it's a thin jersey, KWIM?

MMM -- Thanks! The popover is darling and the colors just pop so nicely. Love. Let me know what you think of the new arrivals when you see them!

Ema -- Yay, I"m glad the Cecilia worked for you! I think it's so pretty. You're right that the dotted dress might hit high for some people. VPL = visible panty lines. (*cringing at even typing the "p" word*) ;)

ashley -- Thanks! The melon color is so gorgeous in person. With a touch of summer color, even better!

  22. I LOVE the Katie Camis, dotted dress and madras popover on you! I didn't see any of these items in my store this weekend, which is disappointing as I would have LOVED to have tried them on... Is the cotton tank dress the Jenny dress? I tried that one on this weekend and it was that exact color. Did it have a zipper down the back. I LOVE these tank dresses. I have a few already and thy are so comfy and effortless to wear in the summer. And that pencil skirt is gorgeous!

  23. I would look for a maxi-length slip. The long ones usually come to right about ankle length. I have both a black one and a white one that I wear with my maxi-dresses. I don't remember where I found the black one, but I purchased the white one off of Ebay. Good luck! :)

  24. The Amie is now on sale in the olive. I tried the short one in store and had the same problem you did, but I think I'm going to try the long one, maybe with a very fitted boyshort underneath?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks, for the post and picturs!! Love the cotton dress (blue) and can't wait to get one of these, but ON SALE, like you said. Love the madras popover, perfect summer colors....july 4th...and kinda liking the floral sheath dress..?? also liking the eyelet cami, in the yellow/gold color, but again, too pricey for a cotton tank!!

  26. Love that light blue dress and the pencil skirt on you. There's just something about that Cecilia dress that bugs me. I think they tried too hard with it. LOL

  27. I like the warm tones in the madras plaid. Not sure what to think about the maxi dress. Sad to hear it's so see thru. I suppose it can be a poolside type item, but it will still show swimwear lines. On the whole, I'm still not enamored w/SP11, but there are a few individual pieces that are winners. Thanks for sharing pics :-)
